Hallux rigidus (Arthrosis/Stiffness of the big toe joint)
Arthrosis denotes a stiffening of the articular cartilage. The degeneration of cartilage in the big toe joint leads ultimately to a painful limitation of movement and a painful build up of bone on the metatarsal bone. Treatment depends on the stage of the arthrosis. If the arthrosis is advanced, it is not possible to save the joint. Normally, the metatarso-phalangeal joint is blocked. Subsequently, it is possible to walk normally and without pain in all types of shoes.
